Egg is the new superfood
9th March 2010
A study by nutrition scientists has found that eggs are one of the top nutrient-containing foods and has recommended that they are eaten on a daily basis.
The research, which is due to be published in the journal Nutrition and Food Science under the title The Nutritional Properties and Health Benefits of Eggs, found that eggs can help with weight maintenance and dieting.
The study looked at previously collected information from 71 research documents which looked at the function of eggs in the diet.
The study review was performed by lead author Dr Carrie Ruxton, with Dr Emma Derbyshire, senior lecturer in human nutrition at Manchester Metropolitan University and Sigrid Gibson, an independent nutritionist. It received funding from the British Egg Industry Council.
The team found that eggs were a low-calorie food, but they had high levels of protein and vitamins, particularly vitamin D.
They also found that eggs were one of the best sources of amino acids and were rich in antioxidants.
Dr Ruxton said: "The health benefits of eggs would appear to be so great that its perhaps no exaggeration to call them a superfood they are one of the most nutrient-dense foods available."
"Eggs are not only low in calories but are packed with nutrients that are essential to healthy living. They are an ideal food at every stage of life, as well as being easy to cook and enjoyable to eat."
