Nearly 50% of women say they are "confused" by the advice given to them while they are pregnant, according to a new poll.

1,303 women spoke to the baby charity Tommy's and to Johnson's Baby. 45% said they had been given "conflicting advice".

31% said they were not sure about which medications they could have whilst they were pregnant.

Close to a quarter of women - 22% - reported they were not sure what type of exercise they could safely take during pregnancy. Almost one in three women did not know if they could dye their hair if they were pregnant.

40% of women said they did not know what foods were safe to eat during their pregnancy, with 15% confused about how much alcohol they could safely drink.

The government's current advice says pregnant women should avoid alcoholic drinks.

Sharon Simms, a midwife and spokeswoman for Tommy's, said: "It is vital that mums-to-be get the most up-to-date information from both their midwife and other credible sources."

Rosie Dodds of the National Childbirth Trust said: "Women are bombarded with information in early pregnancy and it can be difficult to make sense of how important it is to you personally."

"There is a lot of information available online, but it is important to use credible sources."

Tommy's will launch its Let's Talk Baby campaign this month. The campaign wants to ensure expert data on pregnancy can be accessed by everyone.
