Global threat from passive smoking

The World Health Organisation has said that almost 95% of the world’s population is not protected by laws banning smoking.

In its second major report on the "tobacco epidemic", the UN agency said secondhand or passive smoking killed nearly 600,000 people each year. But the seven new countries which passed comprehensive smoke-free laws in 2008 still only took the world total to 17 and it warned that tobacco – which kills five million people a year -  is still the leading preventable cause of death.
